flash fiction

Aloha poets,
Flash fiction from my novel,"The Outpost," inspires today. Enjoy!

... rustle in the tall Banyan quickens the heart, in the mist a distant echo of giant trees. Haunched in the shadows, fresh perceptions open to the faint percussion sounds on the jungle floor.

She is a young creature less than a year old, her scent exotic, pheromones a prelude to heated battle. She is beyond sensual. Her nakedness didn't matter to the jungle. Blood in the shadows primal against any intruder of territory. Claws razor sharp, and white teeth the only discernible signals, if signals at all. Her athletic musculature contorts, eyes embroiling for attack, a noble beast imbedded with nature's most direct order. Tonight she carries the sound of the hunter--silence, teeth shown, claws erect, survival's final solution.
.
No time exists now. Instinctive hormonal rage, this meeting an inevitable crossroad of the evolutionary trail. She is art in motion. Fine tuned by eons of genetic connections, an intrinsic balance between available oxygen and gravitational detriment. She has nothing to learn. Her skills are all here--the same genes offered by the very trees that hid her and--the ones given her by someone, or something else.

Her eyes shift now, looking for a passionate kill. There would be no division of urge, an ancient directive-- pure focus. Tonight it would be...

Tropical Fuzzy

Aloha Poets,
Tropical fuzzy inspires today's poem. Enjoy!

Sod Rain Inroads

Souped up shark fin on new china
Braised blue fin across Mariana
As wildlife vie in short order
Fins race wild out to all quarter

Under vast water cataclysm fools
Where sharks are tossed cynicism cools
Recent days frozen slow to movement
Species on prison tray improvement

In kind the world needs a new safari
Yet so far holds off high ground to party
Farmers stalk nations stark to move in
Boosting searchlight on shark and blue fin

Left alone out there on the edge
Swimming free over Mariana ledge
Nice new china soup du jour fin taste
A vast open water under sea of waste

Songs in saltwater have made great strides
Summer satiation whale soup palette slides
Chef joyful in forts overlook hunger's cliff
Rain forest roosters crowed even for the deaf

Technology fishes for neon signs
As blue and shark fin crosses lines
Curious exchange in tastes for the hunt
Poor island nations forged to be blunt

Shark and blue fin so far and few
Times for demand even now spawn anew
Journey together for safe passage through
Sharks all alone in swims for the blue

Waikiki Breaks

Aloha Poets,
Flash fiction inspires today. Excerpt from my novel, "The Outpost." Enjoy!

Inside the lab station, Dr. Cooper feels the pressures of the day mount. “Just an urge,” he thinks. The directive of ancient genes skillfully crafted by unknown forces.
Training had prepared him for gene mechanics, but something was different here. Genetic codes, DNA, gene expression, and proteins of primal genes usually follow predictable patterns in gel boxes. He looks again.
“Tamperings." This would be the last word to emerge from his consciousness for awhile.

Cooper looks over at Suzi, in sleep mode for the night. Why is she so remote, so distant, so inner directed as if preoccupied with her own Abysma program? For the past week--and mostly today--Suzi's photovoltaic tints are a sharper blue. Her scanners focused a little more. Auras drift, sporadically, from her lab bench. For a second he wants to check her monitors--not to doubt her day's activity, he could never do that--but to free himself from the laboratory, to be free to go outside again, into the jungle, even for a moment.

The back door of the research station opens into the night. Cooper steps out, feels the cool chill and follows an ancient trail through the glade of Banyans leading beyond to the mountain. There are no tracks this low in the jungle. He wouldn't find them until he was further up the mountain.

Smooth mists lift off the tops of the jungle canopy into a clear moonlit night. The shadow of the lab building fades as Cooper makes his way further into the the darkness. He hears no life in the trees. Only the song of distant waterfalls and the wispy sound of the wind. As a coolness settles onto the shadows, the jungle floor darkens again.

Purple Cools

Aloha Poets,
Purple cools inspire today's poem, Enjoy!

Soft Fields of Sod

Influential thoughts stop by of late
Binges singe beyond safety's cool gate
Shadowy prayers offer to be sunnier at heart
To foster a fresher parenting from the start

Entertainment the school asks if anyone is there
As wishful thinkers sink into their daily player
That village feel came long after a lonely birth
Attractions give way to a public wide girth

Is it fair to discount those who attend the fair?
Finding vision's mystery under dirt sod there
Allegations fester in river of grand a riddle
Families cruising grounds for a cake on a griddle

So much to learn with so little change
Seasonal swords aggregate on great plains
Buttered fields out where wavy grains spread
Transformers move slow behind wooden sheds

Soaked in tradition defies all odds
That dirt and dung odd couple of sod
Safe and secure surely opposes scary
People grow up similar also to marry

What does it take to defy the gods?
Strength of conviction as courage plods
Security reigns surefooted to trod
Back to the village onto soft fields of sod
